Young students visit the AMRC Training Centre during inspirational Engineering Extravaganza

Students from schools around the Sheffield region got to try their hand at welding and learn about the potential benefits of an engineering apprenticeship when they visited the AMRC Training Centre as part of an 'Engineering Extravaganza.'

Around 120 pupils, aged 12 to 14, from a dozen schools took part in the Extravaganza, organised by four leading engineering institutions– the Institution of Engineering and Technology(IET), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3).

During visits to the Training Centre, some of the students and their teachers had the opportunity to use a hi-tech welding simulator, tour the Centre's workshops and talk with apprentices about what was involved in becoming an engineer.

They also got hands on experience of different engineering disciplines by working in teams to solve engineering challenges set by the institutions which organised the Extravaganza and some visited the AMRC's neighbour, independent research and technology organisation TWI.

The Engineering Extravaganza was organised as part of 'Tomorrow's Engineers Week,' which aims to inspire young people to become engineers and change perceptions of engineering among young people, their parents and teachers.
