AESSEAL®

AESSEAL® is a renowned global engineering company that specialises in the design and production of high-precision mechanical seals and support systems. The business is part of the AES Engineering Ltd Group generating a revenue of over £262 million in 2023. Operating globally across 200 sites, two UK sites, including its head office, sit within the catchment area of the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre. 

Apprentices from the AMRC Training Centre are typically sourced as either Engineering Technicians (CNC machinists) apprentices, who will be manufacturing components for mechanical seals, or Engineering Technicians (technical support) apprentices who will take a more technical support role within engineering. In 2024, we have also recruited our first Engineering Technician (Mechatronics Maintenance) apprentice who will be responsible for the maintenance of complex automated equipment within our Rotherham manufacturing workshop.

The business typically commits to a consistent year-on-year intake of AMRC Training Centre apprentices, with the highest intake being seventeen in 2017, and the lowest intake being four in 2023. With a well-trodden apprentice pathway and a competitive apprentice salary scheme, the business has a high apprentice retention rate of 80 per cent, meaning that many of the apprentices subsequently go on to form a key part of operations within AESSEAL. 

AESSEAL lauds the success of its involvement with the AMRC Training Centre programme by noting the quality of the resources available when it comes to supporting apprentices through their learning journey. This includes mentorship and effective learning and development strategy/. In addition, the stringent entry standards mean AESSEAL is assured of the quality of apprentices, allowing them to reciprocate the high standards throughout their learning journey and beyond. 

The business has also seen successful apprentices having a positive impact on operations, and their examples of apprentices moving into team leader and management positions as their careers have progressed. Looking in the future; and as part our longer-term succession planning, AESSEAL expects to recruit at least two new Engineering Technicians (CNC machinists) in each Rotherham workshop for the next five years which will see at least circa 30 engineering apprentices joining our business over this period.

In addition, AESSEAL continues to work collaboratively with AMRC Training Centre via Industry Advisory Boards to help develop the future knowledge and skills required to support engineering and manufacturing in the future.
